The coaching industry is thriving as demand continues to grow as individuals experience transformation in their lives. Contributing to the growth of coaching are the rapid, continual changes in business in recent years. Herminia Ibarra and Anne Scoular write in Harvard Business Review, (https://hbr.org/2019/11/the-leader-as-coach):
“Twenty-first-century managers simply don’t (and can’t!) have all the right answers. To cope with this new reality, companies are moving away from traditional command-and-control practices and toward something very different: a model in which managers give support and guidance rather than instructions, and employees learn how to adapt to constantly changing environments in ways that unleash fresh energy, innovation, and commitment…The role of the manager, in short, is becoming that of a coach.”
A coaching industry pioneer and co-founder of Performance Consultants in Great Britain, Sir John Whitmore, defined coaching as “unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.”
Among the best-known specialties in coaching are life, business, executive and leadership coaching. This is part of a series looking at what each of these coaches do and the benefits experienced by their clients.
Leadership coaching is a partnership between a coach and leader(s) to transform the quality of the leader’s life and achieve meaningful change by helping them learn and become better leaders. This can be accomplished at both an individual and an organizational level.
There are three important things to know about leadership. First, leadership does not come from being a boss. John Maxwell writes of positional leaders in his book The Five Levels of Leadership, “people follow because they have to.” It is a good starting place with no real influence.
Second, most people don’t think of themselves as leaders, but the reality is that most, or all of us, are. Whether you lead dozens of people, a handful, or just one, whether it is at home or at work, you are a leader. People are watching you.
Third, the toughest person for any of us to lead is ourselves, which is why some leaders are not effective in their roles. Leadership coaching begins with helping people grow personally and professionally. When you are growing personally and professionally, your leadership ability also grows, and you will gain followers and more opportunities to lead.
A leadership coach provides tools and resources to help professionals and business leaders develop and enhance their skills and abilities so that they can become more effective, maximize their potential, and increase their influence.
Outcomes of engaging a leadership coach can include:
Most highly successful people will tell you they had someone along the way who helped them navigate the challenges of life and business. My mission as a leadership coach is to do just that to help people maximize their God-given potential and lead fulfilling lives of significance.
